MIDPOINT REFLECTION

How has the internship been the same as and/or different than your expectations?
The internship has been different than my expectation. I work in a nursing floor but that floor my manager don't even look at me. I fell sometime so boring because there is anything to do. But the office is better because I have a lot of work to do and I'm getting some experience of how people work in office. I know now working in office is a very difficult thing to do and there is no time to play.

What is similar and different about the culture of the school environment versus the workplace environment?
The similar ant culture of my school and the environment versus the workplace environment are we all work very hard to help other, people are from everywhere and speak different language. The diferent is that at school there is to much noize sometime the student fight and they don't listen to their teachers. But in a hospital like Saint Vainsant Hospital everyone respect each other, they work very hard, they are very busy, and the people have to do all that their chief say.

What new skills have you learned that apply to the workplace? Which of these are transferable skills?
The new skills that I learned that apply the workplace are: Communication skill: before I was very shy to speak with the patients or my co-worker. But new I speak a lot and ask question to the things that I don't now. Organized skill : In the office I organize many documents. Sometime I have to files many papers and put it in alphabetic order.

What kind of relationship do you have with your mentor and co-workers? How have you grown as a result of interacting with professional adults? What kinds of communication (verbal and non-verbal skills) have you gained?
I have a very good relation with my mentor or co-workers because I give them respect and they give me also respect. I have grown as a result of interacting with professional adults because I gained many skills and it helped me grow like a women. I gained the verbal communication because sometime I talk to the patient or sometime I speak in the phone with many people who need help in their office. so they call me to go help them. After I fell so proud of my self because I did a good job.

What challenges at the internship have you faced that you have overcome and how did you overcome them?
Exactly I did not face any challenges in my internship. Since that I started my internship everything is fine. And I hope it will continue until I finish my internship.

What challenges have you faced in school as a result of the altered schedule and how are you handling them?
Exactly I did not face any challenges as a result of the altered schedule. Every time I get homework and I have to go to my internship I manage my time. Like I leave Brooklyn to go to Manhattan it take me many hours to arrive, so I do all my homework in the train.

What goals are you working to accomplish during the remaining five weeks of the internship?
The goals that I'm working to accomplish during the remaining five weeks is to gain the skills of how the doctors interact with each other.

  1. Mariama,

I’m glad you’re enjoying the office work. It makes perfect sense that you would enjoy being busy as opposed to being bored. It makes the day go faster and you tend to learn more as well.

I’m so glad you are helping others at St. Vincents. Maybe you didn’t expect that before you began.

I’m surprised you didn’t think it was a challenge to ask questions at internship. At first, you seemed very shy, and now you seem much more confidant.
